Finished and test drove my 2001 Z71 after converting to 4l80e, been down for 2 months and got it going tonight, excited too, drives great. I'm using the 4l60 tune. One thing tho that bothers me is 200 degree transmission temps at 80 outside air temp. I install a new cooler with an electric fan, think I'm going to put my old cooler back on, I think it does a much better job. Anyway way what temps are normal for the 4L80? I'm used to 130 on a hot day and 180 towing on a hot day but that was with the 60e.

Drove truck quite a bit last night and saw trans temps reach a peak of 210, so today after work I swapped my old cooler back on in place of the new cooler with electric fan. Transmission temp reached 150 and held, outside air temp 89. I'm comfortable with that.

Not sure what cooler you have but I am running a tru cool 40k with a 2800 stall converter and my temps have yet to go over 155 even in start and stop traffic and 90 degree outside temps.

I got the same problem, also running a MP112. Mine over heated on me and I parked it changed fluid n filter. Still runs about 190-220 depending on how I drive it and where. Gets hotter on stop n go then highway/freeway driving. I just put a fan on it but haven't wired it up yet. I also have not bypassed the radiator yet either.

One Issue I find with mu current 60e is that my headers basically touch the stock cooler lines for the tranny... makes things heat up quick sometimes. I would check your 80e lines for clearance by the headers.

Mine are far from the headers with the 80e. With the 60e they were on it so I wrapped the headers, but my Y pipe is almost up against the pan. Do you think the heat exchanger being so close has anything to do with it as well? How is your setup Sid?

I'll check Saturday morning to see if exhaust is to close to any transmission lines and check temps at lines nearest exhaust. Thanks good tip.

I have bypassed the radiator and my trans cooler is mounted just under intercooler in front of radiator its a stack plate 24x8 x1. Will a transmission run cooler after a break in period? Never heard that before but just wondering. Temps are still holding at 150. Do miss the lower first gear of the 60 and it shifts a little smoother than I'm used to, will add a shift kit when funds allow it. This has been an extreme budget build and has cost me just under 2000.00 not bad considering my last 60E build cost 3600.00.
