Smile Let's talk about gears.

I want to replace my 3.42's with some 4.10's this spring and my Uncle highly suggests I go with a set of GM gears because they are quieter and have a 5 angle grind (quieter). I'm not so picky however. I don't want to hear gear whine because I do travel the highways but I also don't want to spend top $$$ on a set of GM gears. What manufacturers do you guys suggest? What about pricing and such? Any of our sponsors here carry anything?

OEM - everyone I spoke with said they are worth the extra dough. You can get them (as well as other gears I believe, like Richmond...) from Randy's Ring and Pinion.

What is a set of OEM's going for this days? Last time I checked was about 2 years ago. I've heard of Randy's ring and pinion before.

i have aftermarket 4.10's in my rear and i haven't heard any whine out of them. i think it has more to do with the setup than the manufacturer of the gear

I have the OEM 4.10s and they haven't whined at all. I'm sure it really does depend on who you get to install them, I took my truck to a local mechanic to get the gears and locker put on and fix everything I blew up in the rear and I believe they ended up taking it to the local dealership to have the gears installed.

Although 90% of gear whine is from setup, the cut on the teeth does make a difference. I have know some Richmonds that were set up right and still made a little noise. From what I have heard, I'd say Motive, US Gear, OEM.
