how about some feedback on the powertrax, its also been a consideration of mine. whenever its brought up the subject is quickly changed to eaton or detroit... are they that bad?

I think the Eaton LSD and Detroit Locker have the best of both price and quality. The Eaton can be had for ~$350 and it is reliable and predictable - blownchevy has one, parish8 has one, I have one - it is cheap and effective. Ditto the Detroit for someone who wants a true locker.

The thing with an Eaton and any LSD is that if one tire loses traction completely you can be in one hell of a situation, unlike a locker, such as the Powertrax No-Slip or true locker like the Detriot. This is one reason why i'm inclined to lean towards the No-Slip, its cheaper than the Detriot and I dont need the added strength of the Detriot, but at the same time when I do go off road I dont want to get stuck. Thats why my original thoughts of a Torsen style *gear driven* went out the door, because a total loss of traction in one wheel will leave you sitting there.

I have had a 72 Chevy and a 89 Chevy, both with lockers in the rear. They have a certain amount of play in them when changing direction, thats where the clunk comes from. Also from cruise to coast and back, like you mention. Nothing to worry about. Just don't go from forward to reverse or vice versa and hit the gas real hard. Unless your stuck offroad and need to get out.
