Unhappy Major ping in the @#$

Help me out!

I'm having this problem where my trans. wants to stay in 4th when doing about 50-60 mph (1400-1700 rpm). If i roll the throttle slightly she'll stay in 4th and ping!!!

If i give a little more fuel, it'll stay in 4th and ping louder! And if i give 1/2 throttle she'll ping slightly, drop into 3rd and then go back into 4th.

I only have ping when in OD between 45-65 mph or less than 1850 rpms. Seems like the tranny really wants to jump up into 4th before it should.

If i drive in 3rd-no pings.
At WOT, no pings!

WTF???

Any ideas?
I already cleaned the MAF, replaced the MAF gaskets (blown out!).
Checked the filter-clean.

by ping, do you mean like a kind of slight sputter? i had something similar with the camaro (didn't have the tranny problem though) turned out the problem was related to a vacuum leak in the intake manifold. Also fouled plugs and bad gas.

Sounds like chains dragging! I get the same sound if i'm in to high a gear and roll the throttle on my Harley.
It's this "oh, i dont think so" kind of sound!

I haven't pulled any plugs but they are only 5000 miles old, like my truck, and i have great performance other wise!

Any other ideas???

I am running a Wester's tune, Lyndon suggested going to an easier 4-3 shift in the tune?

they shouldn't have to mess with the tune, but they'll sure check for codes. Maybe take it to a mechanic and have them make sure no codes are being thrown.

Have you found the problem yet? I am a complete novice when it comes to this stuff but I think it might be the tune. I have the exact same problems lately and the only thing I have done to my truck is a magnaflow and Westers 89/91 hot tune. I noticed that you have the same tune. I haven't had time to see about a retune because of some family problems but I am going to get a retune right after the New Year to see if that is the problem. Please keep us posted if you find something out.

how long from the tune install before you started having these symptoms? It's more than likely tune related. Sounds like it's not going into pe mode when you are nailing it in too high of a gear, not that may be your problem exactly(downshifting is a few other tables as well), but pinging is usually associated with not enough fuel. Lots of trans settings effecting timing and TQ management. Sounds like your tune was made on a friday afternoon...around 3:30PM. Call Webster!
