Modding a 100k+ mile truck, how long will my transmission last? Look here!
About the truck: 2005 Silverado 4.8 RCSB 3.08 gear and 4L60 purchased November 2011 with 97k, one owner, mint condition until it came home with me.
April 2012 fresh LS1 installed @ 117k miles. 349rwhp which is close to what a full bolt on 5.3 w/cam makes. Stock stall and transmission, no mods there.
So how long will my truck last when I add the power? I've seen this question asked a lot, not sure if anyone has purposely tried to do it just to see how long it will last. Just a tad over 23k miles of service behind the LS1, hard miles....3 sets of new rear tires. More WOT throttle runs than a NASCAR road course race, 100mph+ seen daily (almost legal in Texas), 24 runs down the strip on October 5th 2012, inner rear fenders permanently coated in tire shreads, Yeah it was a good run!
Honestly I really thought the engine would go first, this is one of my engines, built from the bare block, no forged piston or crank, just some good ole speed pro pistons and a new GM crank. EBay head studs, yes those $59 studs that make you cringe! GM MLS head gaskets, sealed power rod and main bearings. Cheap run of the mill Melling oil pump, stock 4.8 injectors. Honestly who needs marine 8.1 injectors on a NA engine?
Last Saturday while riding around with my favorite tuner (haulin **** down highway) we both agreed the transmission was not happy. Fast forward to October 16th it happens...no more chirp of the tires on 1-2 shift, later same day 1-2 shift sounds like you hit water on WOT run. Tranny fluid looks like dark roast from Starbucks.
So under extreme to the max abuse, id say 15-20k miles would be a fair estimate. If only occasional abuse? You may not ever have a problem.
So while it was fun driving the truck for almost a year, back to the tank of an Avalanche for my daily. Anyone curious to see what inside of the engine looks like?
