I was going to go the 3.90 route but decided to go with 3.73s and drop from 70 series tires to 65 series tires on the rear. It brings me close to the 3.90s. I want it for towing but it will work for your purpose also. then when I'm not towing I'll run the 70s and still get the mileage around town. There is about an inch difference in diameter of the tires. If you were to run 60s it would even be better. BTW i'm running 16 inch rims. I just bought a set of 3.73s and the master install kit from this guy for $195 shipped on a make offer. The gears are made by US Gear who also make Yukon's gears. Here is a link to his ebay store :http://stores.ebay.com/RONS-MACHINING-SERVICE
Hope this helps ya.

from what ive heard from other people who have been around them, every set of 3.90 gears whines or roars, and they say that going with OEM ratio gears solves the problem

if gears are set up right there should be very little whine if any. IV got Superior gears & true-trac and no whining or other problems here.
