Default No crank spacer with 5.3L/4L80E conversion?

Ok here is the deal. I got the converter completely engaged on the transmission. I measured things out so I know it is fully engaged.

There is 1 1/8" from the bellhousing face to the mounting lug face on the converter.

If I put the 4L80E crank spacer on, the mounting surface where the converter lugs will hit the flexplate are 1 5/16" off the back face off the block.

That is 3/16" too much.

If I take the crank spacer off there is 7/8" from the back of the block to the mounting surface on the flexplate.

That would leave a 1/4" gap between the flexplate and converter.

So should I just shim space between the converter and flexplate about an 1/8" with washers so the converter only has to pull out 1/8" or what?

I've never heard of anyone with the short crankshaft that hasn't used the crank spacer on their 4L80E conversion. Has anyone else ran into this situation before.

Why me?

PS - I have a SFI flexplate but, tried a stock one and it is the same distance off the block as the SFI one.

What do you want to see?

All the measurements are accurate, I read a tape measure for a living and have gotten pretty good at it.

are you sure the tq converter is all the way on? I'm sure you have, but have you replaced a tq converter before?

I would like to see pics of the crank spacer.

I'll get some pics for you.

I have replaced a torque converter before but didn't put it on all the way and blew up the pump.

I don't THINK that is the problem here but, will get some pics to try and explain what I'm seeing.

Crank endplay? I've read about lots of issues with crank thrust bearings, especially after someone has been into their engine. Don't know that you have? Documents I have say that stock end of block to flywheel should be about .875. You are at 1 1/8 if I am reading your measurements right. The number I have is from different platform though.

The end of block to stock flexplate measurement is .875 on my truck without the spacer so it's right on. With the spacer it it goes to 1 5/16"

The 1 1/8" measurement is from the front of the bellhousing on the transmission to the converter mounting lug.

So you can see I am missing about a 1/4" somewhere.

It all points to the transmission side. You have 1/4" clearance. It should be 1/8". Bellhousing to TC lug face should be 1" you are at 1 1/8. There is your 1/8 " Right?

I'd probably bolt her up and measure, hoping I'd screwed my measurements up on the floor. If I got the same thing I'd probably say screw it and shim it.

No, I have NO clearance. The flexplate and converter are 3/16" too close to each other with the spacer bolted up. Evidently no one has ever done a 4L80E swap without using the spacer on the shorter crankshaft.

Without the spacer there would be 1/4" clearance but, the spacer is supposed to be there so I'm assuming it is a problem elsewhere.

I have pics I'm uploading and will post them in the other "crank spacer" thread in a minute.

**nevermind, this is the "crank spacer" thread.
