No crank spacer with 5.3L/4L80E conversion?

Measurement A is 6.875" on my converter. I already checked it when I was on the phone with Jack at Precision Industries. He said that is the spec they build them to.

man all this stuff on the converter. is your new flexplate flat. or does it look like the 60e one. should be flat. as for it being seated it sounds darn close. i had to have my converter redone when i got the 9 1/2. they had to lengthen the center hub and move the bolt nubs out. when my 80e was bolted in i had 3/16 space from the flexplate to the verter mounting hubs. i pulled the verter out till it stopped. doesnt take much. it will come to a point where it will stop. then i measured this and went back. i used1/8 inch spacers in the end and it worked perfect. dont know if this helps. i think first when i got mine the space was more than expected. but i was using a 1997 80e instead of a newer one.

Niether of the flexplates I have are flat. I need a 1/4" to be perfect. A flat flexplate would probably do that.

I'd bet a front pump that converter is completely in there too.

I'm still going to try and talk to a tranny guy tomorrow though.

My 4L80E converter didn't need to be shimmed,but my old TT3000 did.You are better off shimming the converter than facing a pump failure down the road.

It is possible the pump gears were installed upside down.

I was thinking that too reading all this. Isn't one side of that gear chamfered on the inside? I know there are dots on the outfacing side and it's definately not symetrical front to back.

the flexplate you need should look very similar to the ones at the top right. it should be flat. if the one you have protrudes towards the converter such as the 60e flexplate then you might have the wrong one. i had to use a flat one from a 6.0 for mine.

It's sounding more like with this swap.

1> Using the 5.3/4l60E flexplate no crank spacer required and possibly need to shim.

2> Using 6.0/4l80E flexplate crank spacer required.

Can that crank spacer be installed backwards? Just a shot in the dark. My spacer is welded to the flexplate.

James B and Gonzo - I will take a look later tonight and see. The thing about that is I'm near 100% sure the converter hub face is going in and hitting the flat surface behind that pump gear I've measured it like 20 times now and it certainly looks to me like it's engaging the pump gear completely and hitting up against the flat surface(whatever it is) that is behind that gear.

I'll also take a picture of just how much room is behind the converter to the transmission when the converter is where I think it's all the way back it will go.

Lance - That is the next thing I will try if the pump gear looks right. I'm certain enough with how the converter is in there that it is not going to go any further. The measurement across the bellhousing which is 1 1/8" is right on the high side of the spec anyway which makes me think the converter is seated properly.

I'm going to measure the offset right now on the 5.3L flexplate and if it is 1/4"-5/16" I'm probably just going to get a flat plate because that would be the perfect amount of space I need. Maybe the converter was built for the old style plate with a new style bellhousing(there is one right?) or something. That is something I didn't think to ask Jack at PI when I had him on the phone yesterday.
