NP243 in place of a NP246 ..... Can it be done?

NP243 in place of a NP246 ..... Can it be done?
I have a 2002 suburban and blew up the transfer case. NP246. In a search I saw that the 246 is always spinning the front driveshaft. I have a NP243 transfer case. Can I install the 243 in place of the 246 or will I run into issues? Will the buttons work correctly and I will just lose the auto 4wd function?
