Default NP246 transfer case clutch pack

I'm in the middle of rebuilding the NP246 transfer case and after much research I see I have to set the gap precisely on the clutch pack and the only tool I can find runs between $500 and $1,000 to help with setting the gap. I cannot find a parts store that has these to rent.
Has anyone used perhaps a micrometer's depth gauge or other means to do this so I don't have to buy a tool that I hopefully will use just once?
