off-road converter...?

Default off-road converter...?

Trying to find out what converter I should be running in my truck for a mix all around use...

75% DD in town, not much highway use at all unless getting parts or
heading to some trails, but I'm sure there will be some 'spirited driving' every few days.
15-20$ off road along trails, some hills, some sand and no doubt mud and muskeg (no its not the same as mud...)

BUT...this truck is built to double as a recovery unit!
That means yanking 7500lbs diesels sunk to the doors in mud with straps and/or literally dragging/towing busted vehicles all the way out of the bush.

5-10% Just screwing around light to light, donuts, whatever...


If this were a street/strip/DD car I could pick one, but seeing how its a heavy (6-6500lbs guessing) truck that needs to do a little of everything, I need ask the advise of others who've actually been there and done it, rather than "my buddy.."


The truck:

1980 K10
LQ4 - 500hp 80mm turbo kit is the plan right now, pretty conservative but no idea where it'll spool at...

Dana60 front
10.5" 14bolt rear - will be welded
TH400
NP205
6" suspension + 3" body lift
39.5"x18" wide TSL Boggers off road (bias ply, pretty light but still a large tire to fling around in the soup)
37"x14" tires for the pavement, may just run these full time...we'll see

From what I've found pouring through off-road sites and such, people are using 1800-2000 stalls mostly on rock crawlers and such, but haven't found anything quite like this combo.

3200 stall slipping along all day and night at 15mph won't generate any heat will it..............? Lol

I'm also wondering the same thing. Im in the process of 5.3 swapping my 84' K5 blazer. Will be cam only and off road, tail only rig. Would 3200 work good for trails?

I've seen guys with 2500 stalls and 3500 and both this two wished they did different

2500 wished more the other wished less. Theses were 36 vs 39 tire size

IMO a tight stall would work best it seems your good with gears and tire combo for off-roading - I'd do 3k to 3200 tight being bigger converter size. To reduce heat but it if need ***** you can have your wheel spin - always run a bigger trans cooler 30k plus

Gears are 4.56 which on a 38" would be equal to 3.23's in a 30" tire I was told.

If I was doing a street vehicle for a combo of dd/strip, then I would certainly look in the 3200 range, but driving slow and easy with a larger stall would generate a ton of heat in the converter it's self.

Maybe ill have contact TCI or someone like that and pick their brain

I would say a tight high quality billet unit.

Yank 2800 10.5"
PI 2600 10.5"
Circle d same thing

The 2600 will be tight enough and tough enough to withstand the work, and loose enough with the right turbo set up to help a ton. Is it ideal for either situation? No.

That's why I might have to speak with a company direct to find setting that offers the best of both worlds...if there even is such a thing.

smaller turbo or supercharger, and a 2800 converter.

you're not a rock bouncer, you need torque not 120mph+ wheel speeds

Dont go over a 3000 that all I can say. You can run into issues along the way. Make sure that converter is tight.
