I have 31.5" tires and a 4.30 rear and i'm doing 1900rpm @ 80mph in 6th. The 1st gear is 2.66 where a 4l60e is 3.06 and the truck 5 speed is 3.82. If you live in a flat plains area i'd say 4.10's is the lowest numerical ratio i'd go with but being in TN you most likely are dealing with hills on the highway and a 4.30 is a must and i'd recommend a 4.56 with the 4.8 to be able to utilize 6th gear and not to mention being able to take off without riding the clutch too much in 1st. The gearing in the T56 was designed for a 3500lb vehicle with 25-26" tall tires. You have to make up the final ratio at the flywheel with lots of rear gear to make it work in a truck with more weight and taller tires.

Allright that makes sense now. I did not account for the weight difference, only looked at the final number of gears. I figured the manual had a lower 1st gear to compensate for the 5 others so I was assuming I would need a higher gear so I would not overpower the rear when I do get my motor swap done.

Thanks for the info, I'm really looking into doing this..gonna start gathering parts soon.

Yes TN does have some uneven land....lol... I think it's possible to go uphill both ways around here.

i did the math for my gearing and 488s at 2200 rpms will be 70mph in 6th with a 30" tire. so sooner or later my truck will be together...my gears are done, my bell housing and clutch are in. just need a few other htigns and i can put it together

I have finally started my other truck, I am runninf a trans that has had all the shfts changed to the viper 31 spline shaft and The viper innerds. Also will be running a SPEC 5 clutch with this setup I got a great deal on this very low miles trans (400 miles total) and I just installed the console and glove box.

If anyone is interested again I have the clutch pedal plates $40. Plus the Shifter and Master Cylinder adjustable rod will soon follow I am posting pics of everything for you guys to see.

Oh and the shifter is a shorty style shifter and it looks sweet here comes the pics.

I have to resize the damn picture of the shifters biut tell me what you guys think.
