Default Pitman arm on a 2001 4wd

I attempted to replace my Pitman arm today, and it would not budge. I got the idler arm off with no trouble. The Pitman arm was stuck on the steering box so well that I started to bend the screw on the 2/3 jaw gear puller than i was using. Any tips of getting that damn thing off? And before anyone asks the obvious, yes I had the nut off the stud

I snapped my pitman arm a couple years ago, that was an exciting experience, but the jaw gear was able to pull it off with a little motivation. did you try smacking it a little with a hammer or anything?

Maybe you need a stronger puller

There is a special puller just for pitman arms, holds onto the arm better to exert more force. Also, sometimes it helps to hit it with the air hammer with some tension on the puller. You can probably rent the puller from your local parts house.

Get an actual pitman arm puller. You can get one for like 20 bucks from a parts store. If that fails. My regular procedure at work on 2500 trucks is to use a cut off wheels and slice a section of it. Then use a big chisel and hammer and hit the slit you made it should cause it to spread and with some force come off. If you use this method it is ok if you go through the pitman arm into the gearbox spline (as long as its not to deep and jagged) the new one should still fit right on.

I have done about 40 of them since i started working at the place im at. About 1/3 of them came of with the tool the rest was a combo of cutting and using the tool.

EDIT: http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...temnumber=1752 (pitman arm puller)

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=92882 (recommend something like this for the DIY'ers)

This is what I meant when I said "stronger" puller...guess I should have said "correct" puller.

I wonder what the price tag is going to be on that tool?

Bininging this one back up!!
This is the puller that I have (otc 8150)and usually works awesome, but there isn't enough room to get it between the pitman arm and that crossmember that is there. I really didn't want to do the cut method but if I have to I will. Any suggestions from the guys that do this everyday. Mines an 03 2500 hd. Thanks Ryan.

O.K so I figured out what to do. First get the 1 1/4 nut off it then remove some of the bolts that hold the steering box to the frame then pivot the box enough to get my puller on it then it should be all good. If not, then i'm gonna take a slice out of it with my die grinder and hit it with my air chisel.
