Default Question on 05' Silverado Rearend

While talking with a friend he asked how hard it would be to switch out his GM 10-bolt rearend for the 14-bolt 6-lug axle so that he can run 5.13 gears in it. Is a GM 10-bolt strong enough of a rearend to handle 5.13's without any problems (truck sits on 41" tires) or is it well advised to just switch out the rear axle for the GM 14-bolt and drop the 5.13's in that. And if it is better to switch out axles is everything direct bolt up such as brake lines, suspension, etc?

Not too bad.

I wouldnt go lower than 4.88s in the 10b, the pinion gear gets very thin after that and is more liable to break.

I was told that for some reason at the end of 05'-06' they switched to drum brakes on the rear instead of the discs and that happens to be the 10-bolt for the swap so what year Silverado am I looking at exactly to swap axles with? It should be the 9.5" 14-bolt from the later model Silverado correct? (Like a 95' Silverady 9.5" 14B with 6-lugs)

+1. The pinion gear would be tiny, and against 41 inch tires........

Track width on that axle is alot narrower, and the spring perches are in the wrong places. If you're able to weld on new perches and get a good pinion angle, you could make it work.

Any suggestions for what year is best suited to me? I'm going to look at a 14-bolt on Monday that is in good shape for only $100 with drums but it is 8-lug. If you know of a specific year or years that I can look for because it's appearing there's going to be something wrong with any axle I choose and I was hoping for direct swap.

An axle out of a vmax or ss will be a direct swap, i think...

I called a place in mississippi that had one. He wanted $1000 for it though....

try carparts.com. If nothing else, it gets you phone numbers of yards that might have it.
