Default random 4x4 engaging

The wife's 2003 tahoe Z71 is automatically engaging into 4x4 (either hi or auto, I can't tell) after it has been setting for a little while(push button 4X4). This has been random and only happened a handful of times over the last 6 months but I suspect something is going out. I have been driving it to work this week and this is the first time I have actually experienced it myself. I can't pinpoint it to anything in particular(temperature, time, etc.); it has happened to my wife twice now when she came home for her lunch break and attempted to go back to work and to me yesterday when I stopped by TSC and was making a u-turn in the parking lot. When it does this, the 2wd button is lit up like normal and we engage it into 4wd hi and then back to 2wd while rolling to get it back to normal. We have not really offroaded it much and probably only had it in 4wheel drive about a dozen or so times. We bought this in plastic off the lot summer 03 and it only has 40,000 miles and has been babied.
Anone else have this problem?

i had a similar problem with my 99. it would randomly try to engage into 4LO. the 4 LO button would be flashing like it was trying to engage. if i was to back into a parking spot, the transfer case would take advantage of the truck going into neutral and engage the 4LO. i took it to my local mechanic and they said it was the push button device was faulty. i think i read on here a while back that the 99's were notorious for this. not sure if that is true for the 03's.

with a new push button insert, i haven't had a problem. this might be what it is for you, not sure though
