Default Rattle in my Drivetrain

Hey guys,

Recently I've started hearing a rattling, kind of close to a grinding noise coming from my truck. It only happens when it's cold, and happens when I'm backing up or taking off from first.

It sounds like it's coming from the rear end, but I can't tell for sure. It seems like it is a tranny problem, because it only happens when it's moving. My guesses to the problem is either my clutch is going or my first gear is going. My hope is that it's a bearing in the rear end somewhere that needs oil or something annoying like that.

It's an 02 Sierra with a ***** out, no hold barred power house 4.8. Anyone have any experience with something like this?

Thanks guys

ive got the same noise on my NNBS 07 silverado with the 4.8. honestly, i think it might be some type of exhaust rattle. i had the same noise on my TBSS too, and it was the exhaust vibrating at that particular low speed RPM.

My friend, I see this quite often with the manual transmissions in the trucks. The ol' Getrag is a real piece of **** trans. It sounds like you have a synchronizer or a shifting fork that is going bad. I usually replace a synchro or a fork whenever we have to repair the unit. Mostly we just replace the complete tranny.

It's an automatic, not a manual. What I meant by first was when it shifts from 1 > 2, and 2 > 4, it never makes the noise.

When I first heard it, I thought it was the exhaust ripping, like when it downshifts hard. But I ruled that out.

I'm taking it to a mechanic today, and I'm hoping I don't have to replace a tranny.

Thanks guys.
