Default rear end issues

Im having a few issues on getting my rear end set up.

ill start from the beginning of purchasing a "supposedly" new tru trac from a member here and a set of 4.11s and install kit from Rons.

Went to set it up and install it and find out the carrier had been modified so i had some collars machined to fit the ends so the bearings would fit right. OK great it worked, a few months later i get a poping sound and gear whine. The collar worked its way out...so i had them tack welded in place and new bearings put in. Worked great for a few more months. Then boom again.

I said hell with it and purchased a brand new true trac from Rons. And a set of AAM 4.11s from a member, brand new.

Went to have it installed today and i had a issue with the ring gear being to far away from the pinion and had tons of slack in it.

No way to shim it over enough to get a good pattern.

I called rons and they helped me out as much as they could but i still dont have a solution.

Have any of yall ran into this issue of have suggestions on what to check.

Im bout ready to put the stock gears and open carrier in it and quit. This wil be the 5th time ive had to open my rear end up and buy new parts each time.

Thanks

are you installing the gears? or having someone do it? not sure what you mean by not being able to shim it over? whats the backlash at? what shim did you use under the pinon bearing?

im having someone else build it. ive built a few and it was worth the money to pay him than for me to deal with it.

like the ring gear is to far over on the driver side not meshing with the pinion tightly.

i imediatly thought the pinion was to deep and needed to come out some to meet the ring gear.

I need to get with the guy building it tommorow and see what we can come up with

went by the shop today,

he had to shim it .80 toward the passenger side to get a good pattern and backlash.

but now my brakes drag because its shifted my axles over.

?????????

Im lost and have no clue what is wrong. Do they have different thickness gears?

they do have diff series gears for diff series carriers. I ran into it with a set of 3.73's. the ring gear is super thick cause the carrier is smaller.

Fire whoever is installing your gears.

You had to shim it .80 or .08????? I would love to see how this thing is set up. Like fastrt stated, you probably have the wrong series of gears.

i dont believe it is the installer
he is a mechanic and has his own shop and owns 4 race cars and builds them all

it needed a 80 thousandths shim so yes .08 my bad.

im taking another look at it tommorow and were going to measure the ring gear thickness and make sure they are the same as my previous setup

when buying for these trucks its tricky because some carriers only take certain numerical gear ratios.. and also the old carriers had different bearing sizes.... so you have to make sure its the right one for your application.. usually it will say 99 and up on the carrier and it accepts gears 2.XX and higher..
