Rear end problem @ 48,000 miles
I'm hearing a grinding noise coming from the rear end. It's not constant...I can hear it with every turn of the tires and it becomes constant the faster I go.
The differential has never been opened up, but I had a friend listen to the noise at idle while the truck was off the ground at his shop. He said the noise was louder as he moved closer to the differential.......said I needed a new rear end & it would be $2,500. Could it be just the inner bearings?
Has anyone else had or heard of this....

sounds like your rear is about to crap out. i would find a shop that will give take a look at it and give you a free no bullshit assessment. as for $2500....thats way to much. I just blew out my 3rd rearend...and it only cost me like $700 to have a new Auburn installed...parts and labor included.

I'm taking it to the dealership Wednesday for a diagnosis...I called GMC about the problem. The lady I spoke with said GMC would need a diagnosis from a dealership before they could do anything. I know my warranty has expired, but at 48,000 miles, this shouldn't be happening. My wife's yukon is a year older with 68,000 & it purrs like a kitten.
What's a good aftermarket rear end if mine is shot? I know the dealership would charge double what the wack job at the shop said.

Dealership says bad bearings.......$1,200 to fix them. He also said that on the 4 other trucks he's seen with the same problem, the gears may need to be replaced....$1,900 for that.
I've got a call in to GMC for this...ridiculous to have this problem.

2,500 is a rip. Talk to some driveline shops, most guys will do sidework for cheap. The outer bearings are an easy change but the inners you are going to need to do a little more work. Is it a 10 bolt?

Yah if its stock its a 10 bolt.
You can go to a junk yard nad find a low mileage pull out for 500$. You can do the swap in your driveway with FEW tools. You could have the complete rearend rebuilt with gears, posi, and bearings for probably bout 800.

I went ahead & ordered a bearing kit for $107.49. Found a local shop that will install them for $250. My only problem was finding this guy....everyone I talked to said there weren't many people here in town that would open up a rear end.
What really sucks is the dealership's attitude towards me, but that's par for the course. Basically said that since I didn't bring it to them for routine maintenance, and I didn't buy it from them, there was nothing they could do. But everyone I spoke with said that at 48,000 miles, bearings going out in a truck that doesn't even tow crap is very unusual.

Listen dude this is common! GM trucks, since the new style came out in 1999 have came equipped with "piece-o-****" rear diffs. I'm on my 3rd one. I replaced my diff wiht a Eaton LSD Locker. Whoever told you $2500 for a rear end is either pricing you a whole rear axle assembly or they are going to fix your and put $2000 in ther pocket and walk off laughing. I can already tell you that GM is not going to help you. With any luck they may do what they call a Goodwill but I doubt it.

Its better to just get the rearend rebuilt than buying the whole thing for 2500 . My cousin had his complete rearend rebuilt with gears, posi, and bearings for probably 800 (Parts and Labor).
