Default Rear end swap?

So I have been helping my friend for a few year on this project. It was a 91 3/4 ton long wheel base work truck! The truck has transformed slightly into a show truck. We have pulled the what started as a 350 that blew up and they replaced with a 305, to the new 350 we put together!

The truck has a stout tranny and drivetrain but he wants a different gear in the rear end! The truck has 4.11's in the 14 bolt behind a 3 speed trans and he has a 2004 10 bolt with 3.73's he wants to swap in.

Now we started measuring the width of the two rears before pulling and welding tabs and all that good stuff! Is this truly a mistake of measuring or are the two rear ends (hub to hub) a different width?
Thanks for the help
Chris
here is a pic of the truck

The general swap has been done. you have to look in the right area though. the brackets are in slightly diffrent locations. If he has a 2wd 14 bolt it will be like 63.5 WMS-WMS and the 04 10 bolt will be like 68.5 WMS-WMS you will need and older 14 bolt from A 4x4 in the older body stle, they were 67.5 WMS-WMS. if you wanted to put one in the 04. To back wards and put the newer 10 bolt in the older truck you will have to either Narrow it while your swaping brackets, or get a different off set whell deppending on his current set up. The mechanics of moving the bracets around will be the same.

EDIT here is one of the 10 bolt to 14 bolt swaps. older 14 bolt in a newer style pick up. https://www.performancetrucks.net/fo...d.php?t=441553

He's wanting to go from the 14B to the newer style 10B???

WHY?? That's going backward...

Ya, I should have been more clear. The basic mechanics would be the same as far as swaping the brackets.

You are 100% right!!! It would be a step back wards to go from a 14bolt to a 10bolt. Not sure why some one would want to do that. if he wanted different gears they are avalible for the 14 bolt. I would even be willing to swap ratios with him. I have some 3.73
