Default shift kit or tune?

which is better for durability? haveing the tranny tuned or added a shift kit. i always thought the shift kit was the better way to do it. hardware is always better than software.

Ahhh, a new modder.
Your best bet for the best bang for the buck would be a custom tune. The hand held tuners are a waste of money. You'll love a custom tune.
I wont recommend a tuner due to the fact there are many out there. My tuner is posted in my sig if your curious.
I'd post a new thread about which custom tuner to use.
If you have some more money to spend, a FLT (sponsor at this site) modified Transgo HD-2 shift kit and upgraded servos would help a lot.
Try and do your mods that you want to do now, then send off for the custom tune as soon as posible.
Most custom tuners give free updates. Meaning, if you add a mod or two, you can just contact that tuner and he'll send you out a new tuned PCM for those particular mods to get the most out of them.
If you have anymore questions, just feel free to ask.

ok so your saying modifying my tranny with software is better than doing it with hardware? i always thought the opposite. ive built up many camaros from 1st to 4th gens, so im not new to modding vehicles.

If you are out to improve the tranny performance alone. Quicker, firmer, stronger shifts. A shift kit is the way to do it. You can pseudo improve these with tuning but by doing so you will be bringing trans line pressures above desirable pressures, putting additional strains on the pump.

If you are out to change shift points, remove tq management, TCC lockup speeds etc... a tune is the only way to do this.

A proper setup for tranny performance is a combination of both IMO. If I were to choose one for improved tranny performance it would be the shift kit.
