It was once stated by Michael Lavine from PUTC there were about 4400 C³'s produced. However, GM said their target was going to be around 10,000 to 15,000 per year, so you hear of various numbers popping up. That 10-15K target was pretty ambitious given that $40 large was (especially in 2001) a lot of money to spend on a truck. Due to GM not listing the C³ as a specific model and only an option, I guess we will never know the true production numbers, but never-the-less they are fairly low. To this day, when going into a parts store and asking for something as simple as a oil filter, if you don’t ask for it by part number, you end up in an argument about whether or not your ½ ton has a 6.0L.

You can use the VIN to check whether or not a vehicle you’re looking at is a legitimate C³.

What do the seventeen digits of a vehicle’s VIN represent?

#1 Country Manufactured - The first character vehicle identification number (VIN) serial number identifies the country from which the vehicle was manufactured: U.S.A.(1 or 4), Canada (2), Mexico (3).

#2 Manufacturer - Second vehicle identification number digit specifies the manufacturer: General Motors (G).

#3 Vehicle Type - Third vehicle identification number digit indicates the vehicle type or manufacturing division: (GMC).

#4 - 8 Vehicle Features - Fourth through eighth vehicle identification number digit reveals the vehicle features such as body style, engine type, model, series, etc.

#9 Accuracy Check Digit - The ninth vehicle identification number digit is a VIN accuracy check digit, verifying the previous VIN numbers.

#10 Model Year - Tenth vehicle identification number digit tells the model year: 2001(1), 2002 (2), 2003 (3).

#11 Production Plant - Eleventh vehicle identification number digit reveals the assembly plant for the vehicle.

#12 - #17 Sequential Number – The twelfth to seventeenth vehicle identification number digits indicate the sequence of the vehicle for production as it rolled of the manufacturer’s assembly line.

A 2001 Sierra C³ will have a VIN like this: 2GTEK69U611000000

Decoding a sample C³ VIN: (2GTEK69U611000000)

2 = Canadian Built
G = General Motors
T = GMC Truck
E = 6001 – 7000 GVWR and Hydraulic Brakes
K = 4x4
6 = Full Size Truck 1500 Luxury*
9 = Extended Cab
U = 6.0 liter V-8 engine (LQ4)*
6 = Check Digit
1 = 2001 model year
1= Oshawa, ONT Assembly Plant
000000 = Line Sequence

* Denotes VIN codes exclusive to the Sierra C³ model. A truck presented as a C³ that does not have these codes in positions 6 and 8 is a FAKE! Also, all C³'s were built in Canada.

Aint it the truth! I'll bet that 1Bear has forgotten more than I'll ever know!

Great info as always Jarrod! I didn't realize that the C3 was so rare, I figured that they at least had a 2-3 year run...
