Yes. It was a weak piece. The most powerful engine you could get with it was the TPI 305. It was the only 5 spd of the era(for that kind of application) that is why the L98 Vettes had the Doug Nash 4+3. They didn't think the T5 could handle 350 ft/lbs of torque.

You have to have a lot of gear in the rear to make it drive like the 5 speed. The 5 speed has a 4.01 1st gear and a much wider gear spacing. You don't need all 6 gears normally. My usual gears used is 1-3-5-6 and from a slow roll 2-4-6.

question, all you guys with the nv3500, have any of you done the drill mod on your hydrualic hose at the connection to the slave cylinder? if not there is two restricing orifices in that end of the hose. to limit the flow of hyduralic fluid and will slow down your shifts and slave movement. just a fyi for any that may not have known that.

the link above will give you the right idea. but on the truck you have to drill the end that connects to the slave, and not the end that connects to the master.

Just on the slave end? Sounds easy enough. Something to do this winter

yeah unfortunataly you will have pull the trans. but it is worth it for the high rpm shifting.

youll need a 1/8" drill bit if my memory serves me right. and you're gonna put the hydrualic line in a vise and drill very easy and as straight as possible so you dont knick the inside plastic hosing.(slower the better on this one, prevents you from binding the bit or wobbling.) you'll get through the first one at bout 2/3" to 5/8" and the second one at about 3/4" to 1", and your done. use some compressed air or brake fluid to flush all the shavings out of the line and reinstall.

so there's your cliff notes version.
