Default T56 into 4x4...Possilbe??

Came acrossed a cheap 1/2 ton 02' rcsb 4x4 with a 4.8 and a 5 speed manual trans. Thinking 6.0l swap and T56 but I would want to keep four wheel drive. I now nothing about the T56. Can they bolt up to a transfercase? I would think so but thought I would ask the experts. And what about the 5 speed that comes in it can they handle any horsepower. Say 6.0-radix...again I wouldn't think so but just throwing the idea out there.

I know the 5-speed probably wont handle the radix'd 6.0. And you're on the right track in ditching it, but I'm not sure a T56 would be a direct swap for the t-case. You could always have a custom tail shaft/housing made. That might be what you'll have to do. You can probably count on modifying one or both of the d-shafts too. I don't think anybody has done this in a 4x4, but that doesn't mean it can't be done.

I searched around here for about a 1/2 hour and it didn't look anyone had done this 4x4 swap. I'm thinking it might be more hassle then its worth. But if it is posslbe I need to go buy the truck right away because it is so cheap it will be gone quick. Are the output shafts easly changed or swaped? The 4l80 swap I did was pretty easy but this one looks to be a bit more challaging.

6gear has done the swap and another guy as well. But NEITHER of these trucks were 4WD!!! If you've done an 80e swap, then you probably are aware of all the little quircks that can arrise during any type of swap. Out put shafts and tailhousings aren't hard to change, but I'm not totally sure about the T56. I don't think changing it will be the hard part, I think having a custom one made would be. I think a custom one might be in order due to the fact that it needs to mate to the t-case.

They dont make a 4x4 t56 that I know of. You could go with a nv45oo 5 speed or a nv5600 6 speed. Both of those are very tough and available in 4x4.

3/4 ton GM's and Dodges from the late 90's up for the 4500, and I want to say the 5600 was in like 00 or 01 up Dodges. 4500's are veyr common and Advanced Adapters has kits to put them into just about everything.

i think the problem is going to be a changing to different output shaft and an adapter for the transfer case. besides that, its just a crossmember and driveshafts. the output shaft is going to be a problem though.

Anything can be done. You might give Advanced Adapters a call and see what they say as they deal with things like this all the time. Let us know if you decide to do it.
