Default Taking out u-joint.... question....

Am I missing something? I took the drive shaft out, took it in to the bench and laid it down. Then I took the metal clips off of the ends of the u-joint (looks like they hold it from sliding in the drive shaft), and then I tried to use clamp on the bench to press the u-joint one direction and try to get it out, but it won't budge.

Now I know I've heard about people melting a plastic clip out, but I saw something about a plastic thing on the inside you have to melt out, so I'm not sure what, or if, I'm missing something. Any help would be greatly appreciated . It's just sitting out there waiting, and obviously my truck isn't going anywhere in the mean time.... lol. Thanks

take a big socket on the bottom and use a large bolt that you dont care to screw up and use a hammer to beat it out..

Most of the newer stuff uses plastic that is injected in around the cap to hold it in place. You heat it up and it pops like a zit and then you drive the u joint apart. All others use some form of clip. I support it in a vice, or press, whichever is handy and use a socket to hammer on or press on to press the caps out. U joints are like voodoo magic smoke to some people but really once you understand how it comes apart and goes together they are simple.

The last thing you said is very true. Once I figured out how to do it it was really simple.... I took it in and out like 3 more times after that... The stupid bearings were a pain.... Thanks for the help though
