You will have to measure the pinion offset to be sure. In the mustangs it was 5/8-3/4 of an inch. Pinion offset is crucial. If it's offset to far you will put strain on the drive shaft under load. Worst case, get one from an F150 and narrow it. You want the pinion offset to match what's in the truck now.
You can buy weld on 9 inch ends for the 8.8 to eliminate the C clips.
Do not use C Clip eliminators!!! They always seem to leak and there more expensive.
The Truck and SUV 8.8 use a 31 Spline Axles. They also have larger and thicker axle tubes then the mustang 8.8.
The only down side is that you may have to make custom E-brake cables for that part to function properly.
My only question to you would be that if your going to go through this much trouble why not just go with a 9 inch??? You can add a back brace to a 9 inch and you can still use the Explorer brakes with the 8.8 style 9 inch ends.

What is the measurement of your stock axle plate to plate. I have a fox 8.8 with all of the goodies Ive been contemplating this with. The C clip elims wont leak if you leave the proper 1/4 inch on the axle tube and dab a little silicone on. And the 8.8 is just as strong as a 9 inch. Cheaper, and uses less power to turn. So dont let anything deter you from using it. The fox housing has a 5/8 offset. I plan on centering my driveshaft and adjusting the wheel backspacing accordingly. The explorer housing will have to be narrowed on one side or you might end up with a wheel nightmare. My. 02

Did some more research on the subject during my vacation, the 99-04 mustang rear end is 62.5" from wheel mount surface to wheel mount surface. The pinion offset is 5/8" so its very close to the factory 10 bolt. From the information I have found on the 10 bolt it has 3/4" pinion offset and is 68.5" wide. This will give me around 3" narrower axle on each side. I gave up on the idea of the explorer axle since it requires machine work and will end up costing me a lot more than my budget.

Be sure you get the braces. Welding the axle tubes isnt enough especially with the weight. Im using a fox length housing for mine. I will be narrowed right at 3.9375 per side. Wich leaves me 1 7/16 leaf to mounting flange. Tight but doable...lol Pretty cool someone else had the same idea.
