Default towing

1. what tranny does the LS1 truck engine use? how many speeds?

2. A. when towing should you use 1:1 or OD?
B. what about if your climbing and still have enough TQ to maintain speed?

I'm worried about the TQ multiplier in OD putting to much strain. If in OD you have to actually use more TQ b/c of gear disadvantage, but get better MPG b/c of less engine rpms.

TIA
Will

In the half tons it has the 4l60e and its a 4 speed. If its not a **** load of weight and keeps downshifting then keep it in od.

What he said. I went the extra mile and put an Escalade Guage in so i had the trans temp guage. I was amazed at the temp differences when hunting 3-od-3-od versus leaving it in 3. If on flat ground with light load, I tow in OD. Anything else and it is 3 for me all day.

My tranny guy told me never to tow in OD with anything bigger than a small fishing boat. I always tow in 3rd.

Ill put it this way my truck was used to pull a 6800# tractor with about a 1200# or so trailer and he towed it in OD all the time now at the slightest hill it would downshift but the tranny lasted to 145,000 miles too. You will be fine towing in od I have heard to tow in 3rd but I have and will continue to tow in od unless I am towing a massive amount of weight. Get a transgo hd-2 shift kit a vette servo and a billet od servo and you will have nothing to worry about towing in od. The line pressure will be increased and and there will be alot less slipping in the tranny.

I am towing 5K lbs all the time over steep mountain passes, many times a year I am pulling my travel trailer loaded including the quad i am over 13K Lbs.combined.Tow in OD using the tow/haul mode,it wont go into OD until you reach around 65MPH and when it senses any load it will down shift into 3rd.Go with a vette servo at minimum,A shift kit would be next, stay away from the billet servo,if its shifting to hard it can take out the input drum.

All he has to do to compensate for the hard shift for 3-4 shift would be when the shift kit is installed just get them to do the street setting instead of high stall or race setting.

I tow my boat(21 ft) in OD with the tow/haul on. Trans temps stayed below 200 no matter what on a 90* day, and that was with the stock thermostat. The engine seeme to be running about 30* colder with the new thermostat, so some of that should tranfer to the trans. If I am in a long stretch where it may be a lot of stop and go I will put it in 3rd, but that rarey happens.
