Default towing...4.30s or.....

looking for some opinons, i've got an 2006 ccsb gmc with 5.3 and 3.42 4x4 z71 all stock. gonna be buying a 6000lb camper andi have a towing question. should i change the gears to 4.30s and be able to keep it in overdrive or keep the 3.42s and just tow in 3rd. ive towed a enclosed trailer a few months back that weighed 3500lbs loaded, it sucked as it would kick in and out of overdrive. i know if i had 4.30s with that weight it would have towed it in overdrive no problem, but my question is with the added weight of 6000lbs im not sure if it would be able to tow in overdrive. going into 3rd with 4.30s and 31.75" tires would suck.

I've got 4.56's in my truck with a 32.5ish tire and I didn't care for them at first, now I love them. I've got a lifted k5 blazer with winch, spare, tools, etc and an 18 ft trailer and I can pull it no problem in over drive.. I came from 3.42's also. If you have no plans to go bigger than a 31 then def go 4.30's. You won't regret it.

If you are staying with the 31's, I'd go 4.10's. I'm on 33's with 3.42's and my truck tows good in 3rd, but I'm ECSB, your CC ways a little more. You might even look into some performance upgrades like air intake, exhaust and a tune. You'd be amazed how much of a difference those can make, plus they will help gas mileage.

I think 4:30's would be over kill. I went from 3:42's to 3:73's to help with towing when I had my little 4.8. The swap made a world of difference. Id think 4:10's would give you what your looking for.

Cant offer much on the 4.30s other than I upgraded trailers this summer and bumped the rear gear from a 3.42 to 3.90s. Now I can acutually run in 4th at hwy speeds witout the fuss while keeping the converter locked the majority of the time. Drivability was greatly improved.

I'm thinking go for it, you won't enjoy the tt as much if you dread the drive to your destination.

i would try the 3.42s first in 3rd and see how that does. even with the 4.30s i guarantee it would kick down on an incline.

I went from 3.23's to 4.10's in my CCSB and I love them. I havent towed anything yet but I do plan on picking up a camper next year.Your truck will probably feel like you picked up 50 hp going from 3.42's to 4.10's.
