Towing with a high stall converter???
Hey guys, I admit im pretty stupid for doing up my work truck (landscaper) because if i ever have any downtime its my bread and butter, but besides the fact-
How do these trucks tow 6-10k# trailers with say a 3000rpm stall converter?
I was at my buddies diesel/truck repair shop and we were all talking about it and the mechanics their seem to think its a BAD idea and wont last long.
Any opinions? Thanks
Korey

a 3000rpm stall will make more heat than stock even if the motor is at 3500. a big cooler helps but if he is going to be towing 10k you really dont wont to go with a high stall.
10k is a lot of weight. drop that figure down to 5k and put on a really big cooler and you could chance it. i have a ~2800rpm converter and tow as much as 5000lbs with it. it is a 10.5" tripple disk i think it would handle quite a bit more. i will be trying a 9.5" in the 3500rpm range next, maybe with the 5 disk's. i hope to be able to still tow moderate loads like 4000lbs or so. keeping it locked up down the highway will do a lot to keep it cool and with only 4000lbs behind me i am sure it will be locked up 99% of the time.

i have the yank tt3000. apparently you can tow pretty much like stock. i've never done it so i dont know. if you want i'd give Yank a call and see what they recommend. but 10,000 lbs to tow is a lot on a higher stall...you might want to spend the money on some other performance things and see how you like them before you go to the converter.

if you want to tow with a converter, i would say get the yank tt2600 or tt3000.
those are the only two i know of that you can still tow with a higher stall like that.
i believe they are 11" diameter compared to the stock 12".
180 aint nothing. that's what i run with my 10" converter with a 30k gvw cooler.
it's when you get to 220 you have to start worrying.
