Default Tranny #6 is toast!

Tee hee - this is almost funny now, but not really.

Picked the truck up at about 3 this afternoon. It is now 11:50pm - and tranny #6 is busted already.

When I picked it up, Ken (my builder) told me that if I got a good rebuildable 4L80E core he would fix it up for me for free, then I could take the 4L60E and sell it. He said it's getting too expensive to keep fixing the 4L60E.

Looks like the truck will be down for a couple weeks while I locate a 4L80E to rebuild. I might end up doing the LQ9 at the same time.

Have him refund all your money and get a FLT 60e

How have you gone through 6 transmissions?? That is rediculous. I don't think that I would let your builder touch my truck after about three but that is just me.

Tranny history:
1. Stock. Installed Radix at 35,000 miles. Tranny was toast by 45,000. Burnt 2-4 band.
2. First built one. Lasted awhile - somewhere around 50,000 miles. Broke the parking gear, rear planetary set, and some other hard parts.
3. Second built one - clutch in converter shredded and plugged up the fluid lines. Lost hydraulic pressure, burnt up clutches. Failed same day I picked it up.
4. Attempt #2 at second built one - clutch material was not properly cleaned out. Hydraulics still not working correctly. Lost 2-4 band day after I picked it up.
5. Attempt #3 at second built one - Broke the input drum splines on a WOT 2-3 shift. Lasted about 6 weeks.
6. Broke the input drum splines (I think) on a WOT 1-2 shift. Lasted....9 hours?

The line pressure at WOT is just a tiny bit higher than stock - I suppose that may be part of the cause, but not the whole thing. My shift points are all set at 5900 RPM. I have been very careful about making sure the revs are down when I shift between PRND, and I always make sure that I am not rolling when I change direction (R to D or vice versa). I use my parking brake on anything that looks like it might put pressure on the parking gear.

I will talk to my builder today if I can get ahold of him, if not on Monday and see what we can work out. He has already told me that he was wrong about being able to build me a 4L60E that can handle what I need, but I still have a 2 year/36,000 mile warranty that says he will fix it when it breaks. If he doesn't like the idea of giving me a refund, I will continue to take the tranny to him to rebuild every time it breaks, which looks like it might be once a week or so (if not more). At some point he's gotta just say screw it, it's cheaper to buy himself out of the warranty than to continue fixing this POS.
