Default Trans question, 4x4 vs. AWD

Is the AWD trans that comes in the 6.0 Silverado SS and 6.0 Escalade the same as in the 4x4 5.3 and 4.8 Silverado? I thought they were the same, but the salvage yard lookups are telling me the 6.0 AWD trans doesn't interchange with the regular 4x4 Silverado trans for some reason, and of course they're telling me my trans costs more.

I'm pretty sure the only difference bewteen the 4L60E in a 4x4 and the 4L65E in your AWD SS is internals, maybe the input shaft as well? Other than that it should be exactly same...

well the tranny in an escalade and SS are the 4l65e, while the trans in a 4x4 5.3 or 4.8 is a 4l60e. the difference is that the 65e has 5 planetaries or something, so it's supposed to be a little stronger.

as far as i know the trannies should be interchangeable, however going from a 65e to a 60e would be considered a downgrade...

The AWD transfer case is different from the 4x4 transfer case and the tail shaft on the transmission may be different because of it. Other than that the 4l60E and 4l65E should be interchangeable. If you have the SS I would stay with the 4L65E because it is built stronger to last behind the 6.0L. If you have already lost a transmission it may be time to look for a built unit rather than go through the same problem again.

Thanks guys, for only 200 bucks more, I'll go with a used 65e to keep the next owner at least as good as stock. My truck is being "de-modded" for trade in on a gas saver econobox. I need a "real" hotrod in order to stop messing with my daily driver. Have fun!

yup, for sure, it will work. The only thing is that the 65 is stronger as stated b4.
