Trans or rear? Need some help
Driving down the road at highway speed, truck starts to whine really loud and it feels like the brakes are on. Now, it will move forward but reverse has a loud whine like metal grinding and it doesn't move. Only have forward gears but it sounds like the ring and pinion were going. Took the cover off the rear cant see any damage just by looking and oil looked ok. Rear or the transmission , I don't know but tranny fluid looked good too and never overheated and I just had it rebuilt Heavy duty less than a year ago. ABS light is on and when I turn the wheels by hand the drive shaft still moves, so does the ring/pinion. So I'm stumped. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks Breeze, I'm leaning towards trans too. I don't know what else could have broke in the rear, I guess the sound was just traveling thru the drive shaft for it to sound like that. Hard to troubleshoot by myself. Any words from the experts here? If reverse goes out and it whines like a like a baby getting spanked what parts could have broken?

I'm no trans expert by no means but I just broke my gears and there is a whine that slowly gets worse and then Pow it goes all at once its loud as ****. One way to eliminate the rear would be to get 2 qts of Dif fluid a gasket Gm's additive and take the cover off and have a look see with a flash light. I dont know why no one else has chimed in.
