get a new one... do not go without it... that is the shift indicator switch... and iirc it does interface the pcm....
also tells the shift interlock/starting system wheather to start the truck or not

Out of the times i've put transmissions in my truck, i unbolt it from the side of the housing, pull it off of the shaft and just let it hang under the truck. There's no reason in unplugging them if you're reinstalling another trans
