Default Transfercase problem.... not good

So yes im a dumb but, hooked the sububran up to the tree stup to see if i could pull it out of the ground. The 6.0L truck just spinns all 4 tires..

Well i tried 2WD... yea john force smoke show. Switched to 4hi, rear tires spinn again, and the transfer case sounded like old wet drumb brakes. I put it in N then trided 4 low. Backed up about 20 feet then went forward 20 feet hooked the chane up again. This time 3 tires spunn, but it was shifting power from right to left and back on the front tires. I backed up tried a different line and the rear tires just spunn and the wet drump brake sound was back.

What im wondering is wtf is that sound. I thought the T case had a chain in them so what would squeel. This suburban is a 2500 with the 8.1L autotrack and 4L80E.

I have had my AutoTrac open, it has a chain drive for the front axle. I am not aware of a viscous coupler used in the AutoTrac, I did not see one when I had mine open.

The NP249 DOES have a viscous coupler in it though!

Here is a partial exploded view of the NP246: http://www.drivetrain.com/246transfercasesillust.htm

Not to hijack the thread, but my 99 Z71 has AutoTrack, does it have a viscous coupler or a chain? I thought it was a coupler...how about the original thread starter, what does his have?

Well this whole conversation is a bit over my head, but i had the same problem with my hoe, but its only a 1500. from what i understand, the transfer case in mine had both the chain and clutches, the clutches being used to engage the 4WD when it was in 4auto.

My dumbass best friend borrowed my truck to haul a old car out of a ditch in a sand pit, and the genius decided to haul on it in 4auto instead of normal 4WD. long story short he has never owned/used a 4WD vehicle and he was just mashing the gas, then letting off and mashing it again. he ended up getting it framed out and burnt all ther clutches and ruined the T-case before he called me to come help

to top it all off when i got there he said he was towing in 4WD and there was no way he coulda ruined the t-case, but when i looked in the car it was still in 4 auto. he refused to pay for it so i was out $825 for his mistake
