Default Transmission Advice - Built 60? 80?

Good Afternoon, To start off I've been reading on the forum for quite some time and have just recently become a member. I have a 2002 Silverado 4.8 with minor modification and about 156,XXX miles. I am the second owner and this has been my first vehicle. (I just graduated High School last year)

Just recently what I've been dreading has happened - my transmission has started slipping, which I know is a problem with trucks about this far into their lives. My father has had quite a few trucks like these all with similar issues at this time. I am looking for advice on what would be best in terms of solving my transmission problem without spending a ton of money, Built 60, 80e swap and if so what that entails modification/tune wise? Thanks in advance, Justin

To be honest you dont have enough power for the 80e. You will hate life with a "stock" 4.8 and a 80e behind it. I know of someone with a 4.8, cam and FBO with a 80e and he hates it. Says its a dog. Unless you are going to put a really high stall (3800) and some steep gears (4.56s) you'll be fine with a "built" 60e. Also if your doing some type of F/I or spraying it then you should get a 80e. I know ill catch hell for this but i dont like the 80es at all. Low first gear and takes at least 500 hp to really justify it. Even if my 60e went, i wouldn't even consider a 80e and i have a FBO 5.3, 3k stall, and 4.56 gears. Hope this helps man.

Try and find a low mileage 4l65e trans at a junk yard, the 65es are a decent amont stronger then the 60s and its a direct swap. Gtos, ssr, trailblazer ss, silverado ss all run the 65s

Agreed with others, a NA 4.8 is not going to like a 80E. I would look for a 65E to run.

The 80e has a longer first gear. If you have the torque to move off the line its great, but if not its gonna be hard.

I'm jumping on the 65e bandwagon for you unless you think there is boost in your near future.

Thanks for all the input guys, I really appreciate it. The direct swap will definitely be easier. I'm going to start looking for one for when my 60 drops dead. Also what do you guys recommend for a torque converter?

Depends on what your going to do with it. Turbo/centrifugal supercharger go 3600 stall to get the boost going, Supercharger (roots style) Get 2600-3000, and N/A anywhere from 2600k-3400 if its a daily driver. There are people that DD with 3600 and 4k stalls but to me that would be a pain in the *** to get moving in traffic. As far as brands i love my yank and am happy with how it performs.

I tend to agree with this guy.

For a turbo you don't necessarily need a converter that loose... but it will spool quicker.
