Default Transmissions?!?!?

someone please school me on trannys.... all that i know is that i have a 4l60e and well that is it. i have seen T56, 4l80e, 4l65e, ect. i would just like to know how many speeds are in the trannys and what would fit in to my truck. transmission are not my area at all so please teach me something.

700R4. Old school transmission without any electronics that runs off of engine vacuum and throttle position to determine which gear to be in. Has 4 speeds, 3.06, 1.63, 1.00 and .70.

4L60. Beefed up version of the 700R4, still runs off of engine vacuum. Same ratios as 700R4.

4L60E. PCM controlled shift points, pump and line pressure and lock up points. Same ratios as 700R4.

4L65E. Basically a 4L60E with stronger internals, same goes with the 4L70E...same tranny just stronger internals.

4L80E. Towing and hauling tranny meant for strong or powerful applications mainly on HD trucks and vans. 2.48, 1.48, 1.00, .75 gear ratios.

4L85E. Beefed up version of the 4L80E.

6L60-6L90E, stronger internals as the numbers get higher. All have the same tranny ratios, but it's a 6 speed. 4.03, 2.36, 1.53, 1.15, .85, .67.

T56 6-speed manual. Ratios vary by year. Most common is the 6-speed backed behind the LS1/6 Vette and F-bodies. 2.66, 1.78, 1.30, 1.00, .74, .50. Z06 got the 2.97, 2.07, 1.43, 1.00, .84, .56.



The 4L60E is the best tranny that you can have in your truck, that's why GM put it there. If you're looking to upgrade, go to the 6L80E 6 speed automatic but know you're in for an uphill battle and an even steeper cost.

how much does the 6l80E go for? and would that fit into the 5.3 silverado?

what about allison tannys? are they diesels only?

What is the reason for wanting to change transmissions? The 4L60E is the best one you can have right now, why change?

i dont want to change really i was intrested in the 6 speed trany. and i would like to learn about tranys some what

I could sit here all day and type up paragraphs for you on how the internals of a transmission work but I think you're better off searching for whatever specific info you're interested in learning about. Let Google do the work for you.

Not to stir the pot, but would have to disagree on the fact that the 4l60e is the best tranny he could have in his truck. Not that its necessarily a bad tranny, but its far from the best, especially with 35's and probably 3.73 gears. I would say a 4l80 with 4.10s, maybe 4.56s depending on driving environment would be the ticket. The 60e is close to its limit on a stock truck. When bigger meats and more power are introduced, the stress is def. more than its designed for. I would recommend a big tranny cooler with those tires and a tune to control tc lockup and shift points. If you burn it up, you should upgrade some internals if rebuilding or just go through the mild trouble of an 80 and be done for many many miles. Again not saying anyone os wrong, just my opinion speaking from experience with these trucks and lifts/ big tires.

you could save money by just beefing up the 60e in it IMO. as long as you dont run 400 hp with those huge tires then you should be fine with updated clutches harden shafts a better reaction shell (weak link) and tightly built clutch packs (a lot of slack and you get sloppy hard shifts that break crap), stronger forward sprag, vette servo, bigger boost valve, accumolator springs and some small stuff. i probably forgot some stuff but it actually is all a lot cheaper than it seems like.
