Default tru-trac in place of G-80

I've got a G80 3.73 rearend and am planning on putting a tru-trac in its place... The one I've got already has bearings pressed on and has maybe 500 miles on it and comes with races and all. And ill be going back with the same gears.

Couldn't I just pull the G80 and go back in with the new unit with the same shim pack? Check the backlash and pattern and go?

Yup, it's that simple. Check backlash before removing the G80, pull everything out, swap ring gear put back in with the shims in the orig location, check backlash again, if it's fine go with it. If not, you'll need to shim the ring gear left or right

I usually check the backlash before I pull it out. Then set the new diff up the same as the old. This should keep the gear pattern the same, and keep the gears from whining.

I would get the contact pattern before removing everything too. Just to compare to the pattern with the new carrier installed. Peace of mind. If it's the factory set of gears, you'll have lots of fun.

When i put the Eaton LSD in mine, we just measured the backlash.
Pulled the G80 out, put the LSD on the ring gear with new bolts. and slapped it back in with the stock shims. it showed that the backlash was within .002" of what we saw with the G-80 and it was within factory specs.
That was a hard 55,000 miles, 7 torque converter, 4 or 5 transmissions, and 2 broken output shafts ago.. Changed the fluid not too long ago and there wasnt hardly any metal paste on the magnet. So thats not to shabby for a newbie!

OH and not all Torque wrenchs read Left hand threads...

LoL how bad is this???? On 3 different LSD's I've installed I set my impact wrench to 200ft lbs, loctited the bolts and sent them home until the gun broke loose. Never had any problems with the bolts backing out even with an engine that put out 530 ft lbs of torque with repeated burnouts. Torque wrenches are for sissy's
