Turbo-too much???

Turbo-too much???
I guess it's really a statment more than a question.
I have a 2001 awd gmc truck with the 6.0 and a 4l65e tranny that let go last night. That's tranny #4, and 2 behind the 800 hp turbo.
I like the awd here in snow country, but I can't keep shelling out $2000+ for trannies every 6 months.
I'm entertaining getting rid of the turbo?-finding a way to run a 4l80e with the awd, go 4wd, or 2wd?-6l80e-????
I am open to some suggestions on this. A 450hp n/a engine with the 4l65e tranny would be fine if I can peddle the turbo, or the engine and turbo together, or find a way to get the tranny to live. Ideas???????

my flt tranny is holding up to 1000+rwhp. i told chuck(flt) i am shooting for even more and he is excited about it.
i am prety sure you can swap out the input hub on your tcase so it will acept the 4l80e outputshaft. then you will need to modify your cross member a little and get your drive shafts adjusted to the proper length. you will also need a little wireing and some tuning for the 4l80e to work. it isn't too bad geting it all working and is really a kick *** way to go. i got 12mpg towing a trailer with my truck on the last road trip, run conistant low 10's and i dont even have to think about the tranny being a problem.

You can do the 80 swap on your truck with the AWD transfer case, But the input gear change is not a option with the AWD t/case. You must have the 4wd t/case to have the input gear change option. With the N/P149 AWD case you can only change the output shaft on the 80 to the modified 27 spline 4L60/65 that's available to accept your AWD t/case. We have built one 80 with this set up for a C-3 truck like yours, but I don't know if the truck is done or even out yet to give any feedback on the t/case life with your h/p. I would recommend that you have the t/case looked at too, I had our customer send me his t/case just so I could check it and I'm glad I did. It needed a planetary and chain real bad, but it did have 80K on it too. I would contact Sean at Speed Engieering for info on the conversion kit. If you need a good strong 80 built, I'm sure we can handle that.

Thx for the replies! I've got 112,000 on this truck.
I'm not sure exactly what your post meant? Changing gearing in the tranny from that of the 4L65 to that of the 4L80 would not be an issue (not sure if that is what you meant?).
I will not do another 4L65 as long as the turbo is on the truck, as after 4 tries it's apparant it just will not hold up to this power level.
Please tell me specifically what I can do with a 4L80 swap and the awd, if indeed it can be done, what the cost might be, and any warranty if any? I don't believe I put down near the power Parish does, or have it at the track nearly as much. I'd like to see it hold up to maybe 20 low 12 second passes a year, and be able to tow without getting hot/slipping/etc...
Forgive my ignorance on what the issues are with the swap. Thx!

What Jim was saying is you can change the input gear of the transfer case to accept the 32 spline 80 output shaft. This is true but only in certain 4wd transfer cases, What I was trying to explain is with the awd transfer case like you have you can't change the input gear of the t/case. The only way you can use the 4L80 and awd t/case is with a custom made 4L80 output shaft which is machined with the same 27 spline output as the 4L60/65, thus allowing you to retain your awd t/case. Sorry if I lost you before, hope this helps. You'll still need some other parts that Sean at Speed Engineering can help you with if you want to do the swap. We can help you with the trans and t/case if you decide to go this route. You can call me at the shop on Monday, and I can go over the trans options with you.
