Default u-joint question

i have a 99 nbs silvy z71 , with a manual t-case. i replaced my ujoint on my rear diff to driveshaft yesterday. i was wondering if the new one was supposed to have the c-clips that go on the caps? i am speaking of the caps that bolt to the rear diff with the 2 bolt straps. i didnt put them in because i didnt think i needed em, and my driveshaft fell out due to the caps moving past the straps. the one i took out only had the clips on the caps that actually go into the driveshaft itself.

I replaced my u-joints with factory replacements and they had clips to retain them...what kind of u-joints are you using, and did they come with new clips? (mine came with new clips)

there are a few ways the caps stay in place. either the metal clips i think you're referring to, that are somewhat circular and goes on top of the caps. there are also c-clips that go on the inside of the yoke and slip into the bottom of the cap. those are how it usually fastens to the driveshaft yoke. now the rear end and tranny yoke(if its not a slip yoke) use the straps with a little flat stub to hold it in place, you shouldn't need any clips for this.

my driveshaft just fell out, no B.S. , while i was going to the gym,5 mins ago. fml. luckily i was only 3 miles from the house, so i just put it in 4hi. its a carquest gold, replacement, it came with clips, but i put those on the driveshaft side, or the side you press in. was i wrong? they were the half moon or c-clip type clips

there should be something on both driveshaft and rear end yokes. if it doesnt have those tabs on the yoke or a groove then it takes the c-clip
