Wear Items in 4L65E: Rough shifts and Flares
My 4L65E has 196K miles on it. Almost all highway from numerous East coast to Midwest trips. Been driving with these issues for awhile but my tranny is a bastard that never wants to fully die. But really that is a good thing.
On light throttle 1-2 shifts are rough enough to bob your head but not quite a shift kit feel. Wife "notices." Doesn't bother me as much but I notice. Shift feels fine under aggressive driving. I put it into 2 when in rush hour to avoid this.
2-3 shifts are ok under very light throttle. 500 rpm flare under almost all conditions. Don't seem to notice a flare under WOT. Seems weird to me.
3-2 and 2-1 shifts are very harsh.
All my calibration tables are stock except for that I elevated some of the low throttle shift points to keep the engine rpm from getting too low due to the higher idle rpm of the camshaft. Restoring a total stock cal does not change performance.
Anyways. Are there any wear items in the 4L65E that could be causing this and is it possible that the tranny could be serviced installed in the car? I am thinking here of replacing shift solenoids or maybe some valving in the valve body is worn? I might try to fix this issue. Planning a tranny swap eventually but if she still rolls why mess with the swap. At least until the beast dies. Plus if I fix it and swap later at least I have something to sell in good working condition.

At 196K, you're surely going to want to pull it down and look at your clutches.
I am sure the Valve body could use a rebuild as well as the pump.
You could also get a reman unit through GM or a GM supplier for around $1600 with exchange. Comes with a Warranty.

haha. It is ok to miss the 196K miles. Most people miss it in person as well.
I will check into the codes. I think a reman at 1600 dollars is out of the question when I can get a working 4L80E for cheaper than the reman.
My big questions right now are how much longer can I keep the 60E alive and am I at risk of getting stuck in traffic or is it likely I will be able to limp it home when the time comes. I say this because I noticed the shift flare about one year ago (lol) but I don't daily the truck anymore. I take the bike unless I see snow.

Just came back from outside. The codes were not set and they are enabled in my tune file. So either they just aren't getting set or because I don't drive it often the codes aren't there from the last time I used it. I will check again after my next drive. I haven't seen a MIL in ages, though.
