Default What trans for a 1987 C-1500 4X4?

I am getting ready to rebuild or install a new trans in my 87 C-1500 4x4. It has a 305 5.0 what would be the best way to go rebuilding the current trans it has or buying a new trans for this truck? Out of these three witch is the better trans to use alond with the 4x4, TH-350, TH-400, TH-700R4 thanks?

th350 will be a fine trans for what your doing- but you can go with a th400 and never worry about it breaking, i wouldnt use the 700r4 for anything strenuouse (sp?)

but to sum it up i guess- i would use a th400 with a mild build

I would use a good built th350.

It can be built to handle about anything a 305 is capable of putting out and it is more efficient and has better gear ratios than a th400. I had a th350 with an NP205 t-case in my 1984 4x4 on 35" swampers and a 383 stroker that I used to beat on off road all the time and never had any problems (with the tranny anyway )

Default Tranny

well the 700R is the boat anchor of choice....LOL.... The 400 is the strongest and should be run if you are gonna run tires bigger than 35's...The only downfall with the 400 is the first gear pack is slightly higher and takes away from your launch velocity... If it is just a driver with 35's or smaller and not a ton of power than the 350 will work fine ..Just run a auxilary cooler for aded longjevity of your tranny...... I LOVE GIVING GOOD INFO IT MAKES ME FEEL LIKE A

I run a sm465 4 speed in my 86 and you can dump the clutch with 35's and not have to worry about the trans. I would not reccomend doing this because I have already broke a trutrac doing it. I hade a 700r4 in the truck and it went out and I found a wrecked 4 speed truck and swapped everything over. A th350 won't hold up to big tires and a 4x4 as good as a th400. JM2C
