Default Whining noise from underneath rear?

I have been noticing for the past week that I have a whining noise comming from underneath the passenger compartment towards the rear of the truck. The pitch increases and decreases with speed and is not effected by RPM. Its starting to get pretty loud now and has got me worried. Could this be the rear end going out?

A bearing somewhere in your rear axle is going out, you better get it rebuilt before it goes out.

yes that sounds like a bearing. ive gone through that before. Its very annoying to figure out..
one thing i did.
Jack up the rear end and support it very well,
crank it and put it in Drive. let it idle, crawl under there with a screwdriver and put the handle end to your ear. Place the other end at certain spots close to the differential. you will know when you find it! thats how i found my carrier bearings were goin out.
Hope this helps.

Thanks guys, think I figured it out though, on the way home the tranny went out Musta just sounded like it was comming from back there. It happened really fast, I went to start out from a light and I could feel the tranny shutter and hesitate and slip a little. Next light it slipped up to about 3000 and by the 5th light it was slippin so bad it wouldnt even go and just barely crawled it off to the side of the road.
