Why does everybody like the 4L80e over the 4L60e???
#11
I would suggest finding one locally at a salvage yard or craiglist. But the range seems to be $400-$800 for a good used working 4L80E. I paid $700 including tax and core charge at the local auto salvage for a 99 unit with 70K miles, it was in perfect condition, but I tore it apart and rebuilt it anyways

I have an 04 Yukon xl Denali trans is reving in 1st and won't shift to 2nd intill you let off the gas. I've herd several things could be o rings??? Not sure but I think it's the 4l65e. Are these pos? Is the 4l80 a direct swap plug and play? I'm not trying to thread jack but this just started happening. Thanks in advance

First read this https://www.performancetrucks.net/fo...-4l80e-424904/
2. In a heavy powerful vehicle a 60-70E WILL not last ! I don't care what anyone says . My truck has ate thru 4 builds , every time it's the 3-4 clutches.
Do the 80e and don't look back , it shifts way better also . First gear is also better , anyone who says it's not isn't putting big power down .
The wiring is simple and consists of switching some pins around in the main connector and adding two wires from the trans up to the PCM for the VSS.
Crossmember is simple to mod , rear drive shaft needs shorted, front driveshaft requires a longer one. .
Read the thread I posted above , then if you have questions come back and ask.
Btw a stock build 80E with a shift kit will out last and outperform a 60e all day long .

Yes, a 4L80E is stronger but he doesn't need one until later. I have done the conversion and yes it is a pain in the *** and costly especially when you add the cost of re-gearing and a programer tune. It is often not mentioned that in many cases a different pcm is required. In my case I had to switch to a Denali pcm to be compatible with the 80E.
I currently run a built 4L80e with my 416 and a 2.9L Whipple and make monster torque. I still miss the 1-2 gears of the 60E. They do make lower 1-2 gears for the 80E but they are not cheap.
Anything can break including the 80E and in stock vehicles. Done it many times. Never put a unknown used tranny in without going through it completely. Otherwise you are throwing good money after bad.

I personally like the 80E gearing much better, I can still spin all four so no need for a lower 1st.
60/65E's do have their place but with higher HP and or weight you are asking allot from them. Simply comparing the internals speaks volumes about the strength.
Duntov- What setup was your 60e in?

Well, when I ran a 60E, and had no problems. You may have not set yours up properly. Cooling, fluids and especially tuning of the trans in the pcm are critical.

You have now made me re-consider the 60e build. I do love my first to second shift. It's what makes n/a 5.3s spiffy. But I do plan to do a turbo build later down the road, but that upgrade would be around 8-10K to do it right, and I need the truck now.
