Attention All Silverado SS and GM Full Size Truck Owners!

I'm Rick from Stainless Works in Chagrin Falls, Ohio. We are pleased to announce the release of our BRAND NEW Mandrel Bent 304 Stainless Steel full system (headers/catback) for the Silverado SS! can you make LTs for a 2wd with 3" collectors and 1 7/8 primaries?

We haven't yet built a set of headers for the 6.0L trucks with a 1 7/8" primary tube. 1 3/4" should be sufficient all of the way up to around 600 RWHP. Also considering the weight of the truck, having a slightly smaller primary tube is beneficial because there is more back pressure and more torque is created to get the heavy truck moving. We only make a large primary tube header for lighter 6.0L cars like the C6 Vette and Z06. Even for a supercharged application a 1 3/4" primary header on a 6.0L is suitable... we have 03'-04' 4.6L supercharged mustang Cobras making 600 RWHP using our 1 5/8" header just to give you an idea. There is a science to building headers that goes far beyond just flow alone and bigger isn't always better. Check out www.headerdesign.com for more info on how headers actually work to make you more power.

No... that is correct. Having good flow and still having some back pressure is beneficial with a heavy vehicle because it creates more low end torque. Dramatically oversizing your exhaust system/headers (or even your intake tract for that matter) can actually have a detrimental effect on performance. This is the reason that we chose to use a 1 3/4" primary tube on both the Silverado and Trailblazer SS systems and a 1 7/8" and 2" on the C6 and ZO6.

OK, first, I am not an expert.

From your headerdesign site:

  1. Primary header pipes must be small enough to maintain the strength of the compression waves and suction waves in the pipes.
  2. Primary header pipes must be large enough to allow optimal flow of gases past the exhaust valve, and down the header pipes.
  3. Primary header pipes must be of proper length to ensure correct arrival time of the scavenging wave that will be reflected back to the exhaust valve.
  4. Collector must be of proper diameter and length to provide the correct duration and intensity of the scavenging wave.
  5. Primary header pipes and collectors must produce a scavenging wave that is present at the exhaust valve during the valve overlap period over an established operating RPM range for the engine.
I know what you are trying to say, but "scavenging" is the goal of proper primary size, not "backpressure"

Anyway, not trying get off topic.

The products look and sound good.

Lets see the dyno #s or track times.

PS. that SSS looks familiar, is the owner a member on this site?

and again thats why i asked for 1 7/8s i wont have a 6.0 over winter i need it for my 7200 rpm turning 408. i need to flow so i need the tube size....if you can make them ill give you guys money if not ill get them custom

Ok, gotcha... you are precisely right and for you larger motor 1 7/8" would work best... ( also I didn't know that you had read the header design site).

I'm glad that you did because not many people know that headers can do THAT much. You are absolutely correct. These are all design aspects that we incorporate into our header but keep in mind that these processes that they are talking about are at an emperical level. As a general rule, because everyone's motor will be different from the factory and everyone will mod their engine different my statement was a just a generalization. As a rule more low end torque will be observed with a smaller primary tube (to a certain degree-- obviously) ... but the ultimate goal is to achieve all the things that you mentioned. These things as I'll explain are very seldom (if ever) tuned into perfect harmony on a street car.

In a factory motor the flow through each port and the AFR in each cylinder will be can vary significantly so that pulse wave in each primary tube will not be timed correctly to take full advantage of a properly designed header... especially at high RPM (not to mention from engine to engine). Stock car builders can have 500+ hours in cylinder head work (valve depth, porting, etc.) to get each cylinder to match the others PERFECTLY. For this reason it's mostly a myth that equal length headers on a street car will make you more power; because nothing else is equal.

We incorporate all that you read into each header but for a factory produced car used in non-competition driving we have to use the dyno and the track to tell us what works best for most cars. On 6.0L small blocks under 500hp the 1 3/4" seems to create the best performance.
