Default 01 Suburban burning oil

I used the search and read a bunch of threads, I just want some opinions.

First off this is my neighbors Suburban, and he knows nothing about cars/trucks except to take it to get the oil changed every 3k and put gas in it. He has an 01 Suburban 1500 2wd w/ a 5.3L with just under 90K miles. The problem just started about a month ago he went on a long road trip. He burned about 8 quarts over 3 weeks and 4500-5000 miles. He checked/added oil when the warning lights went off. I was notified of the problem when he got back last week. I flushed the motor changed plugs and wires cleaned the intake manifold. Since then it started the whole hard starting and blue smoke, so its burning oil again. The pcv valve was on back order at the local dealership, should I just replace it with a new old style pcv valve or just wait until the new style is in stock?

I dont want to risk doing the ls6 valley cover on a vehicle I dont own. So we're probably going to go with the catch can. Has anyone had any success with the catch cans off ebay? The homemade catch cans didnt seem as effective for everyone, but he would rather not spend $200 on the AWM one. Does anyone know of a tried and true effective and inexpensive setup?

Thanks

Ok the check engine light went off again. It only had about 1 quart according to the dipstick, I dumped 2 and a half quarts in it and told him not to drive it. We waited about an hour and cranked it up and let it run for 5 mins. Now it is reading a quart over.

Any ideas?

All I can say is that adding in a catch can is not the solution in this case.
