Default '04 TB bypass - data logged, noticeable gains.

I know this mod isn't really all that highly respected or taken too seriously...

I finally got around to pulling my coolant lines this weekend. I noticed something that I haven't seen mentioned - my IAT's actually DID drop.

Before doing this, if I'd idle for about five minutes in 80 degree weather, it would be nothing to see my IAT's climb to over 110*F. Timing starts to get pulled when the IAT's are over 86*F. 110*F IAT's would net about 3-4 degrees of timing being pulled. It would take five to ten minutes of easy driving to bring them back down again to within 10 degrees of outside temp.

After the mod, I see IAT's while driving hovering between 4 and 5 degrees over outside temp. Idling for five minutes, the IAT's only went up 3 degrees. That's a biiiiig difference.

that's interesting considering the location of the i.a.t. sensor.

No kidding. The IAT is in the MAF by the filter, and the TB is so far down stream.

WTF?? That makes no sense then. I have to be mistaken.

I was under the assumption that it was in the TB itself.

Something else must be going on - let me look into it. I had the whole intake (TB "forward") off this weekend. Maybe I screwed with something.

Whatever you did, leave it alone.

Right, Zippy?

Well I feel like a jackass!

Turns out that when the fans kick on, all the hot air is blown around and sucked up thought the intake. THAT's when I see the big IAT rise.

In my little tests above, the truck was definitely up to temp, but I assume not quite hot enough for the fans to come on. With the DCC fan controller, it's hard to tell if the fans are running when you have the hood closed... hence the confusion.

I tried to isolate the factory intake openings from the engine compartment, but it's pretty useless. Air gets pulled in in front of the airbox, under the airbox, and I believe back by the firewall to up along the wheel-well on the inside of the fender. When the fans kick on, air blows all over the damn place. Especially down around the front wheel-well area - directly under the 'box.
