Question 180* Thermostat questions

I'm thinking about changing the factory 195* t-stat with a Hypertech 180* one when I change the camshaft. I know this topic has been discussed before, but I'm looking for some new feedback. I'm running the factory fan clutch and have been seeing consistent 197-199* temperatures with the scan tool...it was about 80* out today when I was checking it, both with AC on and off.

That seems just perfect for me now, but I was wondering if I could benefit from running just a tick cooler when I change the cam. And if I do switch stats, I want to make sure I get a quality one. Any other manufacturers make the cooler stats besides Hypertech? Will a GenIII Camaro 180* stat fit?

go speed shop and ask for one. their is a german company that makes them the name slips my mind. running cooler will always help reduce detonation, and increase power. i would go to a 160 but that's just me, oh and everyone else on this site. hehehehe. e

I've heard there could be issues running at 160, but I don't remember what they are offhand. Wish they made a 172.5 thermostat...

i did'nt have any issues. but i imagine you're referring to cold start which i believe only goes up to 140. any other issues can be tuned out. there are several tables in edit that use temp as an adjuster. besides just because you have a 160 t-stat does not mean your truck will run at 160. mine appears to avg about 175. but that's with e-fans, i'm getting a dcc controller to make the avg more consistant. lowering your coolant temp should also help slightly lower your trans temp which helps with longevity. e

I pretty much have my mind set on the 180* stat, I think 160* is just a little cool for a fuel injected daily driver in New Jersey....gets pretty frickin cold here in the winter. With the factory 195* stat I consistently run between 197-199* degrees. Today it was 90* and humid, saw 203* for a second while beatin the snot out of it, then leveled out at 197* again.

I was checking out some Camaros and Corvettes at the track today, and the T-stat housing looks the same. Don't those cars come from the factory with 180* stats? If so, does anybody have the part numbers?

The Hype-Tech "160" has an actual "pivot"
temp of about 175F. The "180" is nearly the
same as stock, which happens to be rated
180-sump'n itself. It just happens to "pivot"
at 194F. I think it's like cams - they rate
duration at 0.050" even though that's not
open enough to be flowing any useful air -
it's just a number everybody can agree on,
not particularly relevant.

well that makes sense then, like i said mine runs at around 175. you should try it, if your heater does'nt work well in the winter do what i used to do when i lived in the cold, partially block the grill. my bronco tends to run cold anyway, when i did that it was fine. the other option being e-fans where you can adjust what temp they come on. e
