Just dropped 50 bucks on a 180 thermostat, threw it in and it still runs right at 210. I know electric fans will help, that'll be next. but still even with the clutch fan I've never seen this happen. Has anyone else seen this or could I maybe have a bad thermostat?

I did the same thing and the chevrolet dealer told me that the temp guage we have is just to show you cold good and hot. It doesn't give a true temp reading. My guage only went down a little and I freaked out. But if you had a bad one I think you would know your truck would probably overheat.

Just because you change your thermo. doesn't mean you cooling your motor any more, Your circulating the coolant more often, which means it's not sitting in the radiator cooling longer. You will have to change the clutch on the fan if you want it to cool more, but then you will here it more often thus losing HP, but it will cool it. best bet is changing to electric fans and adjust the sensor to come on approx. 5 degrees below your thermo.

My truck reads the same after I modified my stat, but aTAP SHOWS IT READING 10* COOLER IN 100* F. When it is 80* the gauge reads the mark between 160 and 210. The temp gauge sucks.

Yeah you guys were about right. after the laptop finally charged I hooked up the autotap and it showed 195 when the gauge showed just under 210. I want to be in the mid 170's to 180 since the 5.3 makes the most power at 178 (so I've heard). So guess I'll go for the 160 thermostat. Thanks fellas

i have the 160stat and a big *** 3/4 ton radiator with the flexalte fan 272 i think, my temps on atap hold steady at 172 with the air on on a 100deg day, not sure how much preformance this gives me but it cant hurt. without the electric fan my temps would stop at 172 for about 10minutes and then climb right on up to 190 or higher, the clutch fan was regulating my temps.
