2000 6.0l 2500
hello all,
new to the forum, and just bought a new to me 2000 silverado 2500 with the 6.0l. It's 4 wheel drive. It's completely stock and completely slow. I do realize this is a heavy truck being a 2500 and 4 wheel drive but, damnit, I'm american and will always want a faster truck than the next guy. Oh it does have the 3.73 rear end ratio as well.
I'm looking for best bang for the buck mods. NO LOUD EXHAUST. I've read that tuning the ECU nets good power. What about the restrictive intake/air filter/ silencer set up? worth replacing? What kind of gains am I looking at with a decent exhaust/intake/ecu tune am i looking at?
THANKS!

Thanks, truckmann, very informative.
I'm looking for numbers though. Does anyone have any personal experience with modifying this setup? Basically I want to get the most out of my engine without doing any internal work and without adding a power adder such as a SC, TC, or nitrous. Mainly just wanting to know the best bang for the buck mods as far as the first round of engine mods.
Oh, and whats the deal with my 6.0l having 300 hp. and the SS silverados having around 345? What's the difference between their motors and mine?
Thanks!!

Best bang for the buck is a custom tune on your PCM. As I recall, you can unlock 30 - 35 hp with a good tune.
The 300 hp motors are known by their option code as an LQ4. They have dished pistons and low compression. The 345 hp motors (LQ9) have flat top pistons and a higher compression ratio. They used to have stronger rods on the LQ9s but I believe that the later models have the same rods for LQ4 and LQ9.
Where are you located?

Educate me on the custom tune process. What kind? What brands? should Is it worth ditching the stock airbox assembly or freeing up the exhaust before a tune?
What kind of exhaust will net the most power while still maintaining the quietest ride? Exactly how restrictive are the stock exhaust manifolds?
What kind/type of air filter set-up is the best?
Any free to very low cost modifications applicable to my set up?
thanks!

If you are going to modify the intake or exhaust, do that first and let your tuner know about your mods.
I think that the rest of your questions are answered in the post above that Truckmann referred to.
Good Luck!
