2003 Silverado Performance Figures. Whats up?
I recently got the new issue of Truckin magazine which had a bunch of truck tests to choose the truck of the year.
The Dodge Hemi engined ram won the title. Anyway the magazine tested a 2003 Ext. Cab, SB 2003 with the 5.3L V8. It ran a quarter mile time of 16.63, and 0-60 in 8.55 seconds. The magazine did not say what gearing the truck had so maybe it didnt have the 3.73's. It also had the quadrasteer system which I am sure added some weight.
Personally I cant believe how bad these performance times are! There is no way my new 2003 Sierra is that slow. using the onboard computer timer I came up with a 0-60 time of 8 seconds but I think it was actually more like a mid seven, since the timer cannot account for fractions of a second. What do you guys think of this magazines poor quarter mile times for this truck.
The dodge hemi didnt do well either with quarter times of 16.55, and 0-60 in 8.54.
Maybe the times were conducted at a high elevation? If this was the case then the quarter and 0-60 times would be up to half a second faster but even then the times are not so hot.
Are there any 2003 owners that have run their cars yet? What times have you guys gotten?

They also listed the 1500 as tested price at $38000 and the 2500 Dodge hemi at $36-37000. WTF? Probably that expensive quadrasteer. That whole article was bogus.

Like you said, it had the quadrajunk on it. Heavy *** componets and in case you didn't notice a different bed to accomadate the 4wheel steering. I totally believe those times. Magazines ALWAYS tend to have slower times unless they are heavily supported by the manufactures. I don't think those times are to far off at all. A bone stock 5.3 2wd ext cab with 373 runs in the 15.8 range. But the Hemi running that slow with the Chevy, now that's just funny. Oh well, so much for the Hemi.

I have never believed 1/4 mile times in mags. atleast since they said a black stepside reg. cab silverado (5.3, whipple, volant box, jba shortys, borla exhaust, programming, 3.73 posi, non-stock tires) ran a 14.75 during the sport truck shootout. i run about that now with just bolt-ons!! what in the hell are these mag. people smokin?

Re: 2003 Silverado Performance Figures. Whats up?
I agree that the quadrasteer stuff and new rear end definitely had something to do with the slower times. Also who knows what gearing the truck had or if it had a locking diff.
What is wrong with magazines today? Its next to impossible to find ANY decent performance figures on our trucks!? Does anyone have any proof otherwise?
Anyway I guess its no big deal since I know how fast my truck really is, even for basically stock setup.
About the Hemi, well not surprising. I couldnt help at first being jealous of the Dodge when I read the 345hp number! Then after looking at the performance figure I wasnt impressed at all. Of course the Hemi tested did have 4 doors but still...
Anyway when I bought my Sierra I did so because of my experience, research, etc. concerning Chevy engines. I figured I couldnt go wrong with an LS1 powered truck. Every time I rev the engine up and hear/feel the power I cant help but be pleased with my 5.3L. Now all I need is that new intercooled Magnacharger kit!

Well I can tell you that my 2003 4.8 5-Speed has hit a 15.5@89, completely stock, even the tires, with the 3.42 open diff. And thats launching like grandma cause I cant get traction any other way. I'm gonna try some powershifting next time as well, but I dont want to damage the tranny so i havent tried it yet.
anyway, Ive heard of the SCSB 2003 5.3's hitin 15 flats, my goal is a 15.2 before I do any mods. Maybe Truckin' was smokin something when they ran them.....

Read the review again and study the pics. Both of the Chevy's are 4x4's and the Dodge is also a 4x4 HD. In that case, those are great times for stock on all of them. Just goes to show you Truckin leaves something to be desired in there tech/review articles.
