I had to take a paperclip, unfold it, and wedge it down in there to push against the actual metal contact to get it to go all the way in. Pushing the wire didn't help at all.

The pin should poke through the rubber. Make sure you removed the clip behind the connector. There are ears on the clip that hold the pins from comming out, it will also not allow a new one to be pushed in. Once the pin clicks in, re-install the clip.
